Install Bob

Depending on your system of choice run the following commands to install bob:

Linux & MacOS

cd /usr/local
curl -L https://bob.build/install.sh | BIN_DIR=bin sh

If BIN_DIR is empty, bob binary will be downloaded in the working directory.

Apart from BIN_DIR, the installation script also supports BOB_VERSION option to install a custom version of bob:

curl -L https://bob.build/install.sh | BIN_DIR=bin BOB_VERSION=0.7.0 sh

Nix Users

bob is available on the unstable nixpkgs channel and can be installed with:

On NixOS:

nix-env -iA nixos.bob

On Non NixOS:

nix-env -iA nixpkgs.bob

Nix shell:

nix-shell -p bob

Nix flakes:

nix profile install github:benchkram/bob

Verify

To confirm that everything went fine, just run:

bob --version

Install Nix

bob requires Nix to install project dependencies, so before using bob make sure you have Nix installed.

You can install Nix by running:

sh <(curl -L https://nixos.org/nix/install) --no-daemon

Above command will perform a single-user installation of Nix, meaning that /nix is owned by the invoking user. You should run this under your usual user account, not as root. The script will invoke sudo to create /nix if it doesn't already exist.

To verify your installation type:

nix --version

You should get a message with current Nix version installed.

Autocompletion

For bash add this to .bashrc:

source <(bob completion)

For zsh add this to .zshrc:

source <(bob completion -z)
